A brand symbol should be assessed in the small and varied contexts where people encounter it. Pentagram’s published Slack project illustrates a deliberately constructed identity; our independent lesson concerns testing a visual direction beyond a single large presentation.
Use the published construction account
Pentagram’s official Slack case study describes an updated octothorpe formed from speech-bubble and lozenge shapes on a grid, with improved reproduction across scales and contexts as a design aim. The account supports those design decisions, not a quantified claim about customer acquisition.
Review recognizable structure at small size
Our interpretation is to identify the feature a symbol must preserve when details become less visible. Test application icons, small document placements, and ordinary digital headers. The symbol should not depend entirely on a presentation environment that supplies generous space and ideal contrast.
Balance personality with construction rules
A playful identity can still use precise proportions and repeatable assets. Define how its shapes relate and how contributors should apply them. The practical goal is not to make the brand rigid, but to allow expressive work that remains recognizably part of the same family.
Include the least glamorous applications
Assess help screens, simple announcements, and dense informational materials as well as campaign graphics. These show whether the system supports daily communication. When a direction fails in one of them, adjust the rules or provide an approved variation rather than hiding the problem outside the portfolio.
Independent exercise: test a symbol where generous space disappears
For a hypothetical team tool’s original identity, place its symbol in an application tile, a browser-sized small mark, a document heading, and a busy announcement. Keep the approved artwork intact and record where a distinctive feature becomes unclear. Compare a controlled small-size variation if the identity permits one. The exercise focuses on context and construction; it does not reproduce Slack’s mark or assume that its published solution fits an unrelated organization.
Show the selected variation beside the main artwork and explain the permitted use. Check whether an accompanying name or label is necessary for an unfamiliar audience. Add those examples to the asset guide instead of leaving suppliers to invent a simplified mark. The outcome is a small-scale usage specification, not a claim about public recognition derived from one internal review. A later identity addition should be tested in the same difficult contexts before it becomes part of the approved family.
