“Useful commentary defines its measure, period, source and implication; noise substitutes urgency, certainty and repetition for analysis.
The specific failure
“The market is booming” and “Now is the time” compress mixed conditions into a slogan. A chart may show a change without explaining whether it is asking price, transaction volume, rent, a subset or a national aggregate. Reposting a headline without its date and methodology turns information into atmosphere.
A practical decision framework
Use a five-part note: measure, geography, period, source and decision implication. State what the data cannot tell you. Separate observation from interpretation, and interpretation from the company’s commercial view. Prefer a small chart with a readable source line over a dramatic number. If the data is provisional, label it provisional and set a review date.
A clearly hypothetical property example
Implementation and measurement
Keep a source register containing URL, publication date, definitions, extraction date and reviewer. NAR describes its research as data intended to guide business and clients; that is a useful standard for context, not a license to generalize. Measure qualified questions, report downloads, source clicks and corrections—not just impressions. A calm explanation also gives the sales team language it can reuse without turning every conversation into a prediction.
Put it to work
- Write measure, place, period and source on every chart.
- Add one explicit limitation to each commentary post.
- Track source clicks and corrections as quality signals.
