A model handed to a property owner is useful only when the owner can find and maintain the information needed for operations. Autodesk’s Tandem documentation describes using building-information data to create and hand over digital twins. The practical task is to define a usable handover, not simply deliver a large file.
Agree the information requirement
Before collecting data, ask the owner which asset information will be needed for maintenance, warranty review and future changes. Record those requirements in a handover brief. A comprehensive model may still omit the particular field the operator needs, so completeness should be judged against an agreed purpose rather than the number of visible objects.
Match records to physical assets
Give each maintainable asset a consistent identifier and connect its approved documents to that record. Check a sample against the actual installed equipment. An attractive model with mismatched manuals can mislead a maintenance team. The verification step is an original recommended control; the product overview itself does not certify the accuracy of project data.
Test the operator’s retrieval task
Ask a future user to locate a component, open the relevant document and identify the responsible contact without help from the design team. Record where the task fails. This acceptance test evaluates the handover experience rather than claiming a productivity percentage that has not been measured in the building’s actual operating conditions.
Transfer responsibility after delivery
Name the person who owns the asset data after the project team leaves. Define how changed equipment, corrected drawings and expired documents are handled. A digital handover is a continuing information responsibility; an initial export cannot remain accurate indefinitely without a review and update process suited to the property.
Deliver an operator-owned handover index
Make the handover index usable by the person who will maintain the building, not only by the modelling consultant. Provide understandable asset names, document links and a correction contact. Test access from the owner’s actual account. A model that opens correctly for the project team can still fail handover if the operating team cannot retrieve or update the information it has been promised.

Your next practical step
Create an acceptance checklist around the owner’s retrieval tasks and test it with a small set of verified building assets. Explore the relevant Gameel service to turn the approved brief into clear public communication.
